Spain holidays for the adventurous

Spain has attracted holiday makers from all over Europe for decades. The Spain holidays offered by tour operators like Thomas Cook have in the past traditionally been of the sun and sand package variety, and this kind of break is of course still very popular, especially with families. However, the diverse country that comprises not just the Iberian Peninsula, but beautiful Balearic islands like Ibiza has a lot more to offer than seaside resorts for those taking Spain holidays - especially for the adventurous.

There are some world class opportunities for cycling enthusiasts in both mainland Spain and across the islands, especially for mountain biking enthusiasts. Areas such as the Sierra Nevada National Park in southern Spain provide excellent terrain for riders of all abilities. Hours of the single track runs that are so sought after by downhill and cross country riders with can be explored with the aid of a qualified guide, who can lead the way to runs that are suitable for the ability of the group. There are several companies who specialise in providing not only mountain bike guides, but tuition and equipment hire as necessary. For the less serious cyclist, bike hire can often be the best way to explore, whether off the beaten track or simply a cruise along the promenade. An easier way to cover distance than walking, whether in mainland Spain or on one of the islands, a spot of cycling makes a nice change to simply soaking up the rays by the pool or the beach.

Scuba diving and snorkelling are also very popular activities throughout Spain, with great opportunities to learn scuba diving off the shores of the Balearic Islands. The warm clear waters to be found around the Balearic Islands are suitably hospitable divers of all abilities, as well as novices. Just off the shore of Ibiza is the wreck of the Don Pedro, a container ship and truck ferry which sank in 2007. The wreck of the Don Pedro lies in shallow enough water to fall within the limits set for recreational diving, and has duly been cleared fit for this purpose. This means that following a suitable PADI certified course, it is now possible to dive the biggest accessible wreck in European waters during a visit to Ibiza - an adrenalin packed alternative to hitting the famous superclubs every night!

The adventurous spirit when it comes to Spain holidays is not limited to sporting activities. The chance to widen your cultural and gastronomic horizons is always there for those that are willing to give it a go. From trying the seafood extravaganza that is paella for the first time, to sampling some of the amazing array of pork produce in the Museo de Jamon in Madrid, there is wonderful food to be tried throughout Spain. Bring me back some chorizo!
